Acivities in Palau
Palau is located at the extreme north-east of Sardinia. It was built at the end of the XIX century. A lot of granite creeks overlook on the enchanting park of the Maddalena Archipelago. It also enjoys a privileged position as it is sheltered from the mistral wind. The seafront leads to the city center and to the city square, where a lot of bars, restaurants and activities animate the summer nights. Craft shops, goldsmiths and souvenirs shops, are located along the mainstreet, which arrives to the touristic port.
La Sciumara, Isuledda e Spiaggia Liscia are just some of the main beautiful beaches of the zone.
Palau offers a lot of free time opportunities and funny activities. Beautiful landscape, naturalistic paths among granitic rocks and mediterranean vegetations make Palau and its sourrandings the perfect place for nature and trekking lovers.
A lot of panoramics points on Maddalena Archipelago islands, like Barrage for example, are perfect places to take beautiful photos. Porto Pollo and Isola dei Gabbiani, are perfect palces for windndsurf e kitesurf lovers.
Wonderful boat trips to the Maddalena Archipelago, allow to discover enchanting marine lanscape and suggestive bays. A lot of boat and sailboat depart everyday from the turistic port of Palau.
For diving lovers there are a lot of opportunities, like in the Rada di mezzo Schifo, where you can dive on the pit where the wreck of the battleship Trieste lay, sunk on 10th April 1943 during a bomber attack to La Maddalena basis.
Palau and surroundings
The symbol of Palau is the Bear rock – Roccia dell’Orso, which owes its name to the extraordinary and resembling shape of a bear, modelled by wind for million of years.
In the North of Punta Sardegna there is the village of Porto Rafael born from the dream of a Spanish nobleman, who gave life to the first tourist area of Gallura in 1960.
A series of fortified military structures rise on the territory of Palau: The Battery of Monte Altura, late nineteenth century, overlooking the archipelago of La Maddalena to Corsica. The battery of Capo d’Orso had to beat the stretch of water to the east on the Gulf of Arzachena and the Island of Caprera. The battery of Baragge, imposing defensive bastion located on the homonymous hill with the function of protecting the coast from possible attacks from the interior.
Other sites to visit are the nuraghe Luchìa, placed to control the mouths of Bonifacio, and the tombs of Giants of Li Mizzani and Sajacciu, near the church of San Giorgio.

The ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone) was established in Montiggia with access from Via Nazionale in the town center. The ZTL was also established in a stretch of Via Caprera, Via Diaz, Vicolo D. Careddu and Vicolo Diaz. Transit and parking are allowed to emergency vehicles, law enforcement agencies and vehicles owned by residents and / or domiciled.
